1972 erschien die ins Englische übertragene Studie Between Class and Elite. The Evolution of the British Labour Movement. A Sociological Study([1960] 1972). Sie arbeitet an der sozialtheoretischen Rekonstruktion der Geschichte der Arbeiterklasse, der Arbeiterorganisation und der Arbeiterelite. Sie ist keine historische Studie, sondern eine idealtypische theoriegeleitete Rekonstruktion historischer Prozesse unter Verwendung bekannten empirischen Materials:"This is not a study which should be judged by the standards of historiography.... the book was based mainly on a secondary analysis of data already gathered and processed by others. Its contribution was configurational. Not substantive: it was the result of applying a new approach and reorganising the known empirical material in a new analytical perspective." ([1960] 1972: ix)
