Abstract
the origin of historical education [Bildung] … must itself in turn be historically understood, history must itself dissolve the problem of history, knowledge must turn its sting against itself — this threefold must is the imperative of the spirit of the “new age”, if it really does contain something new, mighty, original and a promise of life.1
