Candidemia

new directions for management and treatment

pp. 37-43

Abstract

Candidemia is cited as the third or fourth most common nosocomial bloodstream infection with high patient mortality and morbidity, resulting in significant costs to the healthcare system (Pappas et al., Clin Infect Dis 62(4):e1–50, 2016; Kullberg and Arendrup, N Engl J Med 373 :1445–1456, 2015). The rise in antifungal resistance and delayed identification of candidemia has led to the development of new diagnostic approaches. Over the past decade, there has been debate on first line treatment for candidemia; however, echinocandins have emerged as the preferred antifungal based on strong safety profile, fungicidal activity, and better patient outcomes based on many studies. Studies have shown patient mortality and morbidity improves with early identification and treatment.
