Grace Davie

pp. 101-117

Abstract

Danièle Hervieu-Léger has made an original and important contribution to the debate about religion and modernity. Drawing extensively from theoretical and empirical texts in the sociology of religion as it is practised in France, she provides many fresh insights into the major debates of the sociology of religion. The multiple strands in her work – most of which remains untranslated – are diverse but interrelated.1 This chapter will refer briefly to Hervieu-Léger's early work; her two most recent publications will be discussed in more detail.
