Advances in knowledge have brought the global human population to the point where the technologies it depends upon are not sustainable. To avoid disaster, knowledge must advance still further. This will depend upon our institutions of higher education. These institutions are now under attack. The attacks are well-funded, well-organized, and effective. To overcome them and go on to produce more and better knowledge will require stronger faculty governance. To strengthen faculty governance, we should learn from those who already have it. We consider four cases: UCLA, the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Chicago, and Reed College. To understand the cases, we apply a newly developed theory of organizations in the tradition of Kantian and skeptical philosophy and epistemology.
