Abstract

In this chapter the notions of abstraction introduced or used in various disciplines are reviewed. In particular, Philosophy, Computer Science, Cognition, Vision, Art, and Mathematics have been taken into consideration. The chapter is not intended to be a state-of-the-art in the selected fields, but an overview of the ideas behind abstraction and its use.
