Embodied semiotics

Shaleph O'Neill

pp. 1-18

Abstract

As we have already seen, it is quite possible to relate Gibson’s view of direct perception to that of Heidegger’s ready-to-hand mode of being. Both theories attempt to describe a primary way of interacting with the world that is based on the emergent relationship between the body and the environment it inhabits. As such, all the points from Gibson’s theory identified above seem to fit across Heidegger’s description of being as ready-to-hand, but what of semiotics? How does semiotics relate to this mode of being?
