During Zambrano's last decades of exile, she grew increasingly disconnected from contemporary European philosophical currents. Her investigations turned towards dreams and the process of coming into being of the subject: entailing expression as well as reception of the other. The chapter analyses the expressive nature of the human being, and it is argued that Zambrano used the Kantian reflective judgement as a model to elaborate on the expressive functions of the subject. Such functions are awakening, directionality as well as the passive agency of the soul. Furthermore, the concepts of sign and symbol are discussed as two different ways of perceiving of the other in an ethical manner. It is concluded that the poetic reason is the reason through which an ethical subject can be formed.
