Abstract

Hermann Günther Graßmann was born on the 13th of April 1809 in Stettin. He received his first education fromhis mother, Johanne néeMedenwald; later he attendedtheUnifiedRoy[al] and City GymnasiuminStettin, at which his father, JustusGüntherGraßmann, was Instructor of Mathematics and Physics. After completing the maturation examination he attended, together with his elder brother Gustav (born 2/7 07), the University of Berlin, in order to study theology. (Their father had also originally studied theology.) There, during his three years of study, he attended lectures withBoekh, Hengstenberg, Marheineke, Neander, Schleiermacher, v. Raumer, Ritter, andseems to have been drawn especially close to Schleiermacher, on whose lectures andworks many commentaries were found among the papers he left behind.
